2014 Episode

Health Week 2014 was held in collaboration with the National Youth Service Community Development Services and other neighborhood hospitals like MediServices Hospital and their medical personnel. The week offered a comprehensive basket of customized tests as well as consultation and advice, ensuring the people not only know about what they need to do in order to address the risks they face; but also to have detailed medical advice on current health status, present complaints, medical history, lifestyle & living, habits and stress levels. There were series of height and weight measurements, physical examination consultations and advice were given by consultant physicians, gynecologists, cardiac consultants, ophthalmologists etc.There was also health counseling on nutrition, exercise as well as active stress reduction, including detailed discussion and explanation of all the findings and additional time for personal advice and care.

DAY 1:  MONDAY, 05/05/2014

At 11:30 am, fourteen (14) medical personnel arrived at the church premises to commence the first day of the medical check up. Their team included seven (7) Doctors,one (1) Pharmacist, four (4) Nurses – three from MediServices Hospital and one NYSC nursing personnel, and one (1) Body Mass Index official.

By 12 noon, registration of patients started in due course. 29 children and 131 adults were registered.

 Available  were nine (9) check stands for all the days:

  • Height Measurement Check Stand
  • Weight Measurement Check Stand
  • Temperature Measurement Check Stand
  • Blood Glucose Level Check Stand
  • Body Mass Check Stand
  • Physicians’ Stand
  • Pharmacists’ Stands
  • Optometrist/Opticians’ Stand
  • Dentists’ Stand

Every patient was strictly advised to go through all of these checks in order to achieve ultimate result. After each patient has gone through all check stands, the team of doctors advise them (after going through their results) on diseases they could prevent or cure; some of the patients were referred to the General Hospital for further medical examination and treatment. Patients with malaria and/or typhoid were given free anti-malaria and typhoid  drugs. Advise were also given on exposure to excess cold and  heat, diabetes and reducing body fat. Lunch was served to the medical personnel at 2 pm during the one-hour break. The examinations continued after lunch, and all medical personnel closed for the day at 4 pm.

DAY 2: TUESDAY, 06/05/2014

Thirty (30) medical practitioners were available to commence the second day of the free medical check up. They included five (11) Doctors, four (4) Pharmacists, three (3) Dentists, one (1) Microbiologist, one (1) Laboratory Scientist, one (1) Nurse, one (1) Physicist, one (1) Anesthetists from the General Hospital, four nurses from MediServices Hospital, two (2) Body Mass Index officials, and one Management Pharmacist.

Registration commenced at 12 noon. Check-ups involved the same procedures followed the previous day. Twenty-five (25) mosquito nets were given to patients that were diagnosed with malaria and typhoid. Prescribed drugs by the physicians were also administered to them by the pharmacists. The medical check up ended by 4 pm.

45 children and 156 adults were in attendance on the second day of the Health Week!

DAY 3:  WEDNESDAY, 07/05/2014

Five (5) Doctors, one (3) Pharmacist, one (1) Dentist, three (3) Opticians and two(2) Body Mass Index officials were present to commence the third day of the health week.

Registration of all the patients commenced by 12.00 pm. Same procedure as like the days before were followed for check-up. One (1) mosquito net was given to a patient who was diagnosed of malaria and typhoid.  Prescribed drugs by the physicians were also administered to the patients by the pharmacists.

One hundred and forty-six (146) adults and forty-seven (47) children were registered and attended to. The medical check up ended at 5 pm.

DAY 4:  THURSDAY, 08/05/2014

At 11:50 am, twenty-one (21) medical personnel arrived at the church premises to commence the fourth and final day of the medical check up. The team included five (5) Doctors, two (2) Pharmacists, one (1) Nurse, one (1) Ophthalmologist, one (1) Dentist, two (2) Opticians, four (4) Nurses for MediServices Hospital, three (3) volunteer Pharmacists and two (2) Body Mass Index officials.

By 12 noon, registration of patients started in due course. 37 children and 132 adults were registered.
